One of the Top 10 Teachers

Nancie Atwell, an English Teacher from the United States of America won the title of Global teacher of “VARKEY FOUNDATION” with the prize money of one million which she give away to her school.

Out of the ten nominees from around the world, Azizullah Royesh, a teacher who himself have five years of formal education, limited by the war, runs an inspirational education system in his school “Marefat” at Kabul.

The education system he has developed and adopted in his school differs from formal education system and seems to be more profound and student-friendly.

TheVarkey Foundation said to BBC” We introduced the prize… to return teachers to their rightful position, belonging to one of the most respected professions in society.”

The news of an Afghan nominee for the Global Teacher prize is spread all over the virtual communities specially “Facebook” among the Afghans.

“Teaching is an art, giving you constant sense of creativity” a quote from Mr. Royesh written beside his photo with the logos of Global Teacher Prize.

Afghanistan, a war ravaged country, still struggling with conflicts has presented itself well in regional and international Sport games during the last decade of comparative peace in this country. This is the first time an Afghan is listed among the top of Global Teachers prize.

The circulation of these kind of positive news in media and social media have great impact on the generation that has seen and experienced not many of prestigious-titles.

The ceremony of announcing the prize witnessed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, and President Bill Clinton as its chief guests.

The 10 finalists were: Nancie Atwell, US, Guy Etienne, Haiti, Jacqueline Jumbe-Kahura, Kenya, Neang Phalla, Cambodia, Stephen Ritz, US, Azizullah Royesh, Afghanistan, Kiran Bir Sethi, India ,Madenjit Singh, Malaysia, Richard Spencer, UK, Naomi Volain, US.
