Women Empowerment - International women Day 2016
The world is celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8th. In this day, women raise a united voice for solidarity, peace, equality and human rights. Afghan women have suffered vulnerability in decades of war and violence. Despite underway efforts to ensure gender and rights equality, but Afghan women, who make half of the population, are still considered a vulnerable group in Afghanistan.
A join celebration of the Women Day was organised by ANAFA, DVV International and the National Literacy Department (NLD) at Rabi Balkhi High School in Kabul.
Dr. Hamida Huma Nuristan, Director of the Training Department of the NLD underlined that Islam urges both, men and women, to acquire education and that women’s literacy is key to empowering women’s participation.
In his speech Dr. Sardar Mohammand Rahimi, the Deputy Minister for Literacy and Non-formal Edcuation, appriciated the work of all female literacy teachers and announced to increase the literacy courses for women.
Empowering Women through betterment of their socio-economic condition has been considered an effective approach to achieve gender equality. women’s literacy and health education is an important focus of the education programmes of ANAFAE and DVV International in Afghanistan. Around ten million adult illiterates make Afghanistan one of the world’s hotspots of illiteracy. In many rural areas only about 8 percent of women can read and write.
Hayatullah Mizayar from ANAFAE pointed out that in addition, more than 34 % of the all 205.000 learners in all Adult Education Centres of ANAFAE –DVV International are women. „We support them with education programmes during their transition from formal school to working life“.
