Afghan National Mobilization Campaign Against Illiteracy

The start of a national mobilization campaign, to improve literacy training and decrease the high illiteracy rate was planned by literacy education actors from provinces and national level at the end of December in Kabul.
The campaign in 2016 will be backed up by an initiative of the president and will under the patronage of H.E. Bibi Gul Ghani, First Lady of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The one day forum titled “Literacy Initiative for Empowerment” was organized by National Association for Adult Education (ANAFAE) and DVV International in cooperation with the National Literacy Department and the Deputy Minister for Literacy and Non-formal education of the Ministry of Education (MoE).


The illiteracy rate of 64 % in Afghanistan is still among the highest in the world.
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and to make literacy education a key issue for the future development of the country and bring new life opportunities. Each one teach one is the basic idea volunteers, e.g. teachers, university students, government officials and Imans should be mobilized and motivated to get engaged to teach basic reading writing and numeracy.
“We want to implement a successful literacy campaign across the country and will use National Literacy Strategy as a guide for this campaign.” said Deputy Minister for Literacy, Mohammad Azim Karbalaie.
Deputy Minister Karbalaie expressed his appreciation for the support of UNESCO, JICA Japan, ANAFAE, DVV International, the governments of Japan, Sweden and Finland and other important national and international organizations. He urged all donors for cooperation to make the campaign a success.
