New Skills Create Chances for the Future
It is one of the main aims of dvv international’s work in Afghanistan to support the members of the reconstruction generations by facilitating access to basic and continuing and literacy education. Literacy learning and adult education are crucial conditions for stability and the autonomous development of Afghanistan, a fact that is all too often neglected in international intervention. Education only plays a supporting role in the development strategies of many international actors.
The work of dvv international and its Afghan partners concentrates on literacy programs that are geared to the requirements of everyday life and designed to increase vocational qualifications and employability of the learners..
Special emphasis is placed on women's education. Four adult education centers have meanwhile been set up in Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, and Heart. Their aim is to facilitate the acquisition of skills needed for social, economic participation. New skills open up new possibilities for participants to actively deal with changing social structures and values.
Acting on the conviction that knowledge and access to knowledge permits and encourage people to make a lasting contribution to civil development dvv international seeks to foster interest in civil and social processes among young adults, especially girls and women.
dvv international is actively involved in drafting a national education strategy in the areas of literacy training and non-formal education. dvv international and its partner, the Afghan National Association for Adult Education ANAFAE, collaborate in the activities of the UN Literacy Decade 2003-2012; and are members of the national working group dedicated to the implementation of the new Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE). The objective is to implement the resolutions adopted in the year 2000 by the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, and to work towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Within this context, dvv international is making concrete contributions toward building civil society, eradicating poverty, and stabilizing the country, considering that a promising future and self-directed development are not conceivable in Afghanistan without education.
